Two weeks from today! 2012 has been a busy year; it seems have gone by so fast that I can’t quite believe we are this close to Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holidays.
Here at Swan Lake Iris Gardens, the rush is on to have all of the lights strung and working in time for the Fantasy of Lights opening on December 1 at 6 p.m. Of course, the Fantasy of Lights is only one featured event of the 10th annual Poinsettia Festival. From December 1 to December 14, various Sumter organizations will host holiday-themed events throughout the community.
I’ve mentioned here before that the Poinsettia Festival is not your ordinary festival. Rather than one event happening in one place, it’s a calendar of Christmas-themed celebrations taking place all over Sumter County. This year, the Poinsettia Festival includes:
- The Jingle Market Craft Show at the Sumter Elks Lodge (December 1),
- “The Nutcracker” at Patriot Hall (December 1),
- The Evening Optimist Christmas Parade through downtown Sumter (December 2),
- A unique interpretation of the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol at the Sumter Little Theatre (December 6-9 and 13-16)
- The much-anticipated annual Holiday House Tour (December 8)
- Carolina Backcountry Christmas at the Sumter County Museum (December 8)
…and more! For a downloadable, printable brochure (PDF), please check back for a live link during the week of November 12. You see, even as we started to work on the brochure, we found out that there was still more happening around town!
One event that does not fit the calendar, but is definitely in the spirit of the season, is the Poinsett Festival, Lunch & History Tour being held this Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the historic Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg. From 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., enjoy buggy and pony rides, a church bazaar, tours of the church and cemetery (final resting place of Joel Roberts Poinsett) and a barbecue luncheon. Admission is FREE; rides are $5 each and lunch is for sale at $10 per plate (eat in or take out).
The Church of the Holy Cross is located at 335 North Kings Highway (SC 261). For more info on the event, please call their Events Line at (803) 820-9698. For more on holiday activities in general, please give us a call at the Swan Lake Visitors Center at (803) 436-2640, toll-free at 1-800-688-4748, or visit online at www.sumtertourism.com.
Join all your friends (old and new) in the Sumter community, as we celebrate the arrival of the most wonderful time of the year!
