Happening NOW: “The Pirates of Penzance” Coming to the Sumter Opera House

Late-breaking news:  My sources tell me that tonight and tomorrow night (July 30 and 31, 2012), the historic Sumter Opera House at 21 North Main Street will  host Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance,” presented by Sumter’s No Ceilings Productions and directed by Kelly Melton.

Although the Opera House has seen new life in recent years as a movie and concert venue, in addition to being headquarters for City Hall, the production recalls the days when the old building served as the “Academy of Music.”  (And although we have no record of it, since the comic opera debuted in 1879, it’s not impossible that it played here by gaslight!)

Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $8 for students, and are available at the door.  The doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m.  For more info, please call (803) 934-6567.
