It’s hard to believe that almost a year has rolled around since the first installment of Sumter’s tourism blog “Sumter…In the Middle of Everything,” which debuted on September 9, 2010 with a write-up on the annual Sumter Green Fall Feast. But it’s with great pleasure that we announce—Fall Feast tickets are here, on sale NOW at the Swan Lake Visitors Center!
The Fall Feast, to be held this year on September 15 (rain or shine!), is guaranteed to draw a huge crowd, and has become one of the Sumter community’s most-anticipated kickoffs for the fall festival season (more on that in the weeks to come). Of course, with the weather we’ve had this summer, it might still be pretty warm, but there will be plenty of cold drinks (soft, and of the adult variety) to cool you off.
On the menu this year are many traditional Southern foods such as chicken bog, barbecue, chili and wings, as well as taste-tempters for the more daring palate. Among these will be alligator, “zesty” collards, Frogmore stew, fried oysters and more. And “kicking” my taste buds will be the frog legs (and I might just kick someone out of my way to get to them!). Past feasts have featured rattlesnake stew and other exotic flavors, but this year brings one that’s bound to give the most adventurous tasters pause. “Cabrito” will be on the menu, and if you prefer to taste it without knowing what it is, stop reading here and skip to the next paragraph. Otherwise, check out this link. Or, you can just take my word that it’s delicious! There will also be many finger foods and more desserts than you can possibly eat.
Featured entertainment this year is Free Flight, a band new to the Sumter area. However, the lead singer’s distinctive voice will doubtless be recognized by many—Nicki Blooze, formerly of Nicki & the Blooze. Wear your dancing shoes and join her and her new band as they rock out the night! (Although there will be bleachers outside, a folding chair might be a good idea, too.)
The Sumter Green Fall Feast will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at USC Sumter, 200 Miller Road. Follow the signs and the cars to the Nettles Building—you can’t miss it! Please remember that this event is for adults only, and that ID will be required at the door. Advance tickets are $25, and a limited number will be available at the door for $30. They can be purchased at the Swan Lake Visitors Center, Monday through Friday from 8:30-5. Tickets can also be ordered by phone with Visa or Master Card. All proceeds benefit Sumter Green. Tickets are limited, so get yours soon!
For more information, please call (803) 436-2640, 1-800-688-4748, or visit us online at www.sumtertourism.com. Since the crowd will be big and the amount of food varies, be sure and come early…and as the event slogan says, “You might get some!”
