This is the last weekend of summer vacation, and despite the still-steamy temperatures, it will somehow seem like fall when our public schools begin their 2011-12 term on Monday. Who can forget the excitement of new clothes, possibly a new school, and seeing classroom friends again? Still, it’s bittersweet to know that another summer has passed and it’s time to get back to work.
However, this weekend promises a host of ways to squeeze in those last couple of days of carefree fun. Some of Sumter’s weekend family-friendly events include:
- “Lend Me a Tenor,” opening tonight at the Sumter Little Theatre. This sophisticated comedy has won multiple awards and been a sensation both on Broadway and in London’s famed West End. For info, please call (803) 775-2150 or log on to the Sumter Little Theatre website.
- “True Grit,” the timeless John Wayne adventure, on August 12 at the Sumter Opera House. The latest installment in Sumter’s “House of Classic Movies” begins at 7:30. Admission is $2.50 per person, and proceeds go to the Sumter County Public Library.
- “Dog Days of Summer,” a romp at Dillon Park with family and furry friends this Saturday and Sunday (August 13 and 14). Family activities and dog contests guarantee a splendid time for children of all ages and whether two-footed or four! Admission is $5. For more information, call (803) 773-9292.
- The Thomas Sumter Academy Invitational Swim Meet, taking place on Saturday, August 13 at the City of Sumter Aquatics Center. The meet begins at 9 a.m. and will host teams from Thomas Sumter Academy, Wilson Hall, St. Francis Xavier, Newberry Academy, Pinewood Prep, Northwood Academy, Heathwood Hall, Hammond, Ashley Hall, and Trinity Collegiate. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
It’s another busy weekend in South Carolina’s Gamecock City…for more information, please call the Swan Lake Visitors Center at (803) 436-2640 or 1-800-688-4748, or visit our events calendar online here.
And if you’re heading back to school on Monday, we hope this is the start of a great year!
