This weekend marks the Dixie Youth Baseball State Championships at the Patriot Park Sportsplex, 380 General Drive (if you Mapquest it, look for 3440 Declaration Drive). The AAA and “O” Zone state-level tournament is the final qualifying event for the Dixie Youth World Series, to be held next month in Moore County, NC.
With Sumter’s history of fantastic baseball players and the dedication of the players and coaches, it looks as though our Sumter American team has a great shot. According to Coach Stephen Touchberry, the team has four talented pitchers, and all twelve boys are excellent hitters. More importantly than that, they’ve got a winner’s attitude. They will take on Lancaster, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The action continues through August 28.
The games are open to the general public, with $5 adult admission, and $3 for children 12 and under. Okay, I can already hear “but it’s hot out there,” and yeah, it is. But our boys are braving this weather in their uniform gear, giving it their all, and they need our support. So if you can, come on out and enjoy a few games! The spectator areas at Patriot Park are shaded, and concessions will be for sale.
In the spirit of the great American game, the Sumter County Recreation Department will host a kick-off celebration on Friday at the Sumter County Civic Center, including a laser show. For more information, please click here or call (803) 436-2248.
