Snow in Sumter…we always get so excited! With the temperate zone that we live in, waking up to a morning like this one is a rare treat. Everything looks so beautiful when it’s dusted in white, and it gives a magical look to our almost-always-green landscape. I’m looking forward to going out in it and crunching around, and maybe making a few snowballs (there’s not going to be enough for a snow man).
A lot of people who didn’t grow up here wonder why everything seems to close down when we get an inch of snow on the ground. I know that I’ve driven through a lot worse in Pennsylvania, so I can understand the wondering. However, it’s important to understand that most native Southerners (like me) don’t really know how to drive in heavy winter weather. I’ve been hearing sirens most of the day, and just hoping that no one has been seriously hurt.
Not only do we not get the concept of chains or snow tires, our road crews are really not equipped to deal with this. So please trust that our local officials are looking out for everyone’s best interests when they advise staying off the roads. You may be an expert snow driver, but you don’t know who else is going to be out there on the roads with you.
Above all, be safe and enjoy the beauty of this rare event!
