Random Musings

These days, one has to look where one’s going when heading into the main drive of Swan Lake.  Trucks and cherry-pickers abound as City crews get ready for one of the biggest events of the year, the Fantasy of Lights.  Preparations for this event begin in September with planning the new figures for each year, tree trimming, etc.  By October, the workers are stringing the lights, all in hopes that everything will be ready to go when the switch is thrown after Thanksgiving.  With 120,000 visitors during the month of December alone, the Fantasy of Lights is not to be missed…and it’s still the largest holiday light show in the state featuring FREE admission.

In other news…with Halloween and Thanksgiving approaching fast, Sumter is full of pumpkins galore!  I am not sure where they come from (I don’t think we grow them here), but it’s really bringing a welcome touch of fall color to the community.  I think this one (pictured) is almost big enough for me to hollow out and wear, if I decide to come to Halloween on Main as the Great Pumpkin!

Speaking of Halloween, don’t forget that the city’s Halloween on Main celebration is going to be held on Saturday, October 30.  However, the normal observance of Halloween will not be changed, so trick or treaters can double up and hit the streets on October 31.  Just remember to be careful and be safe!

The closer we get to the holidays, the faster the events keep coming.  To keep up to date, please follow us on Facebook (Sumter, South Carolina) or check out our online events calendar at www.sumtertourism.com.
